52% of individuals feel their symptoms are ignored, dismissed, or not believed when seeking medical treatment.

Implicit bias impacts us all. In medical situations, patients can’t get the proper care they need when they aren’t properly heard about the symptoms and concerns they present to their healthcare provider.

That’s the problem state/of seeks to solve.

The Symptom Tracker App

First and foremost, state/of is a symptom tracker phone app for patients. Released for BETA testing on Vancouver Island, BC in 2025, users can track, view trends, send reports, and view their doctor’s notes and diagnosis from the palm of their hand.

For doctors, it works as a link to their patients, allowing them to see and gather input into their updated database laced with MedAI, a new technology aimed to ease accuracy in diagnosing, and treatment plans, and providing security and trust.

To showcase our downloadable app, our research, brand, story, and MedAI technology, I curated a website to act as an informant and promoter for the cause.

My Process

As this was my capstone project in university, I drew from issues I cared about. At first, my research pulled me down the path of misogyny in medical diagnosis, but as I continued my ideation phase, I thought that the solution could have a broader audience base. This is where the idea of covering implicit bias in medical diagnosis came from.

In the planning stage, I developed the brand “state/of”; creating the colour scheme, audience, aesthetic and design principles. While in the developing stages of the brand, I kept up to date on new research findings and data to help support my objective.

During the later stages of solidifying this project, participating in a panel review with two industry professionals was majorly helpful in catching potholes in my project. With the feedback from these individuals, my professor, and my peers, I got to expand my scope and hone in on what I was trying to accomplish.

MedAI is a machine-learning source that links to clinical research and databases worldwide to assist our medical professionals in finding the best care for patients.

It isn’t intended to replace doctors but rather enhance their work; to catch unintended bias and eliminate misdiagnoses.

Our research ranges from our app to universities and organizations we have connections to. Patients can participate either by agreeing to have their data collected anonymously, or they can take part in our targeted research studies*.
